Falling for Foreshortening! Self-portraits!

Awesome results! What fun! This lesson in self-portraiture and perspective is a favorite. The project is done in pencil, sharpie and colored pencils. Students get to 'dress' themselves and even use accessories for fun in their portraits.

First they trace around their shoes and hands. Then they decorate the shoe soles in their own colorful designs, using a mirroring effect. The palms of their hands are done with their own 'lines' of life.
Next, they sketch in their bodies, clothing, hair and facial features. Artistic license is allowed when dressing their sketches in their favorite outfits. Lots of color is encouraged. As usual in a self portrait, it is supposed to look like the artist. We feel that they were able to capture their own images quite well. See the rest of the portraits at www.yestudio.org/gallery.

This is a larger than usual piece and we are excited to display these in our yearly show at the Blount County Library in August of 2010. They will also be on display in the workshop, for the Last Friday Art Walk on Fri. Jan. 29th, at ArtSpace in downtown Maryville.
